- Marcia C. -

about

Y ahora estamos todas,
Sacando las espinas,
Gritando temblorosas,
En valentía enfundadas.

La sangre nos baña todos los días,
De dolor se empapan las hermanas.
Gritamos alto, cada vez más alto,
Pero solo el viento nos escucha.

Nuestros caminos parecen distanciados,
Pero no es lo que buscamos.
No queremos caminar a vuestro lado,
Queremos caminar con ustedes.

La lucha está empezando
Y las primeras van cayendo,
Cual gotas de lluvia.
Ellas empezaran los bulliciosos ríos,
Hasta ser gigantescos mares.

La bravura emerge de nuestras bocas,
Bocas que ya no callan,
Que gritan desesperadas.

Queremos que amar no duela,
Que hablar no atemorice,
Que abrazar sea lo diario,
Sin sangrar al siguiente día.

Nadine Altounji met poet/dancer Marcia Castro Gamarra at a party in Cusco, Peru in 2018 and the connection was instant. The two women spent time together, working out concepts for songs as they bonded over discussion of art, women’s rights, colonialism, dispossession, privilege and their personal experiences with the complexity of embodying and existing within intersecting cultures and identities. Marcia offered to write a poem for Nadine about the protests for women’s rights that had been ongoing in the region. “I ran home and looked for inspiration,” recounts Marcia. “I watched the news and started to think, why are we protesting? What are we looking for? What happened to the women in the protests?”

Marcia’s own lived experience of surviving an abusive relationship had transformed her understanding of Feminism, herself and domestic violence. Being victimized by an intimate partner is isolating and humiliating, and far too often fatal, but for those who survive the healing begins when women stand together to demand change. From Warsaw to Cusco, women have taken to the streets demanding liberation from oppressive religious laws that seek to control our lives and our bodies. Inspired by how women across South America have been fighting the patriarchy for their right to live in peace, Marcia wrote Marcha de flores. The poem explores the ground, watered in women’s blood, in which this flower of resistance bloomed. Recited by Nadine in Spanish, the poem is read over music Nadine composed and plays on guitar.

We chose to release this song on Women’s Day in honor of our sisters, mothers and daughters and our collective struggle for equality and freedom. Violence against women in any form needs to end.
